Intensive Reading 2 is a continuation of Intensive Reading 1.
As the name suggests, Intensive Reading Course focuses on reading texts intensively i.e. thoroughly with clear goals, e.g. answering comprehension questions, studying the vocabulary, and learning the subject matter.
The instruction in this IR course focuses on both understanding the content and on reading strategies/ skills. Metacognition on the strategies is nurtured.
Following Macalister (2011), four learning goals for IR are:
1. Focusing
on new languages such as vocabulary and grammar
2. Focusing on ideas such as themes and topics
3. Learning new skills such as making inferences and
identifying main ideas
4. Paying attention to text features such as genre structure
and cohesion
This IR course in particular also attempts to help learners to improve their reading speed and encourages extensive reading to improve learners' fluency.
